Searching the Parish Registers

Searching parish registers can be very time consuming, especially if you don't know the parish and have to look through an entire county.

Searching the records online is straightforward and can save you the journey to the relevant archive and going through the records manually on hundreds of reels of microfilm. To find an ancestor online you can simply type in the name of the person you are looking for, and with the click of a button you can have your results almost instantly.

The website that has the most Parish Registers available for people to search is TheGenealogist, and they are continually adding more records.

1.Typing "Thomas Jones" into the search box
2.Choosing "Tickenhall" as the Parish
3.One of the two results of my search

If you are a subscriber you can also use their Master Keyword Search or virtual books interface. To begin my search, I logged into TheGenealogist. I then chose to search "Derby Marriage Registers" for an ancestor. Once I had chosen to search these marriage registers, I was presented with a search form - I simply had to type in my search terms (the name of my ancestor), and choose the Parish where they married. (If you are not sure of the Parish, there is the option to search all of them.)

I typed "Thomas Jones" into the search box, and chose "Tickenhall 1628 - 1812" as the Parish. I got two results for my search - I found my ancestor in the second result, married to Mary Baxter in 1748.

4. I found that my ancestor was married to Mary Baxer on 26th June 1748
